This mountain bike tour is unique and sure to be one that you will remember. Starting from The Bike House, our ride takes us towards a small rural road in the hills where you will see a Costa Rica that is traditional. The dirt road meanders along with the small river it follows. We ride through forests with giant Cenizaro trees and beautiful Guanacaste trees. We might come across all farm animal you can imagine: cows, pigs, goats and horses all roaming these back roads. Keep your eyes open for families of white face monkeys, spider monkeys and howlers jumping from tree to tree. At our destination we will be greeted by a lady called Casta, who lives on the site in her small farm house. Following a trail in a river bed, we can see more than a dozen petroglyphs carved deep into stones that have survived the harshness of time. These petroglyphs are a mystery as not much information of the people who carved these beautiful pictures is available. One thing that is known is the petroglyphs have been dated between 800 and 1200 BC.
This is a easy ride that will ask a bit of cardio as we climb up into the hills. The climb is very gradual with short steeper sections. We can easily push our bike up anything that you cannot ride. The good news is on our way back is all downhill.
Casta is part of a sustainable community project where The Bike House Costa Rica helps locals to get involved in the tourism industry, specifically around mountain biking. Casta enjoys hosting our mountain biking tours and she benefits from those visits, as she is making a little money. We are very happy to support her and her family that way.
